The Power of “No” in Business

by Fitima Miller, MBA

There is nothing quite so empowering or deflating as the word “no” depending on how you use the word as an entrepreneur or in how you receive the word when others use it. I want to help you reclaim the power of this word for yourself.

It is important to note that there are many different types and uses for the word “no.” These become especially important in business. I discuss several of these in a chapter on the power of “no” in my book Entrepreneurship: The Path to Prosperity – 10 Secrets to Becoming a Successful Entrepreneur. You can find much more detail and additional useful information there. Today, we will discuss four types of “no” briefly.

The No that Drives You …

“No” can drive you, if you take it as a challenge. This is especially important at the beginning of your business when you will hear “no” a lot. You can let it defeat you or you can take that power to drive you to achieve what you know you are capable of doing, but that others cannot yet see.

The No, Not Right Now …

There is a type of “no” that leaves the door open. When you are trying to close a deal and it just doesn’t quite come through, you may be planting a seed. Openings may come later and your presentation could stick in their minds until that time. “No, Not Right Now” has paid off for me very well in the long run.

The No that Sets You Free …

Sometimes you have to say “no” to others. Not every partnership or business venture is right or healthy for you. Sometimes you have use the power of “no” with others to free you from entanglements which get in the way of your success and your dreams.

The No that Saves You from Yourself …

You have to fight the urge to quit when things get tough. You also have to have the wisdom to know when it is time to change paths. This is a tough one. We can stick too long with problem ideas which drain our resources and use up our time. Sometimes saying “no” to ourselves saves us.
